OK, well, first, this is not a pedal return spring, it's a pedal assist spring. That becomes important, so I thought I'd clear that up.

Removal:

If you need to remove the clutch pedal, y ou will probably need to remove the LH fresh air vent, and loosen the e-brake from the bottom of the dash, and move the e-brake to the left.

Remove the upper clutch rod. Grasp the pedal with both hands, and lower it to the floor. Since it is an assist spring, it will try very hard to slam to the floor. While the pedal is on the floor, remove the up limit stop from the pedal support bracket. Pull the pedal up toward the dash, until the spring has zero tension. Pull a bit farther, and the spring and insulators should fall out. Release the pedal. If you are removing the pedal, remove the retainer and slide the pedal to the left.

On a 64-66, the pedal must be installed properly, also the spring bracket on the pedal support. The pedal up-limit stop on the pedal bracket must NOT be installed. Pull the pedal up toward the dash, until the spring bracket and spring hook on the pedal are close enough to put the spring on with zero tension. Place the nylon spring bushings on the bracket and pedal, and install the spring into the two nylon insulators. Carefully lower the pedal, until the weight of the pedal holds the spring and insulators in place. Grasp the pedal with both hands, and lower it to the floor. Since it is an assist spring, it will try very hard to slam to the floor. While the pedal is on the floor, install the up limit stop on the pedal support bracket. Grasp the pedal with both hands, and lift it up to the stop. Since it travels over-center, it will try to hit the stop. Now install the upper clutch rod.

The 67-68 is only slightly harder to do than the 65-66 because the pedal stop is part of the pedal support bracket, and cannot be removed. You may need to loosen the handle bracket on the e-brake to get enough clearance. You should also have a rubber stop for the up-limit. If it is rock hard or missing, get a new one.

While the pedal is on the floor, remove the retainer and slide the pedal to the left. Pull the pedal up toward the dash, until the spring has zero tension. First, the pedal must be installed properly, also the spring bracket on the pedal support. The pedal up-limit stop is part of the pedal bracket, so the clutch pedal shaft should NOT be all the way in the pedal bracket, but an inch or two to the left. The brake pedal (manual brakes only) should be installed. Grasp the pedal with both hands, and lift it slightly off the floor, and slide it to the right, to get the pedal shaft all the way into the racket, and install the clip on the end. Grasp the pedal with both hands, and lift it up to the rubber stop on the pedal bracket. Since it travels over-center, it will try to hit the stop. Now install the upper clutch rod.

You may need to loosen the handle bracket on the e-brake to get enough clearance. You should also have a rubber stop for the up-limit. If it is rock hard or missing, get a new one. Glazier Nolan can help you with that.
